As we look towards the festive season (and the over-excesses that sometimes results in) Dr Dyson is finding out how you can improve your health by taking an Integrated Lifestyle Medicine approach. She will soon complete her Lifestyle Medicine Diploma and from January will be able to offer support to patients wanting to take an evidenced based, holistic approach towards improving their health and well-being.
We are all aware that modern life with it’s stresses, dietary patterns, lack of physical activity and reduced opportunity to sleep all impact on our health. By taking a Lifestyle Medicine approach you can really identify areas where small changes can have a big impact to improve your health, and receive support in making and maintaining those changes.
Lifestyle Medicine can be helpful for a broad range of health issues including obesity, diabetes, mental health problems, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, IBS, insomnia, hormonal imbalance and many more. It can also help reduce your risk of future disease e.g. if you have a family history of heart disease, diabetes, dementia etc and help support your health at any stage of life such as around the time of menopause, for reproductive health or to support healthy ageing.
Lifestyle Medicine takes into account the “Six Pillars” which contribute towards our health and well-being:
- Diet and nutrition
- Physical activity
- Stress levels
- Sleep quality and duration
- Use of, or exposure to, harmful substances (e.g. tobacco, alcohol)
- Relationships and social connection
Perhaps you can identify one or two areas (or more!) from the list above where you feel change may be helpful, but have been struggling to maintain healthy habits or know where to start. It can feel daunting particularly as we approach the New Year and it seems there are so many resolutions we “should” make. With an initial appointment with Dr Dyson you will develop a personalised health and well-being plan that takes into account your goals and preferences. This plan will help focus your efforts and make the changes achievable. Follow up appointments can then be arranged to support you in making those changes and reviewing your goals as your health improves.
If you would like to hear more about this approach please listen to the podcast here, see more detailed information about Lifestyle Medicine on our website here or speak to our reception team. Appointments will be available from mid-January are timed perfectly to support you with a healthy 2022!
